Imported chicken not main cause of lower priced domestic products: MoIT

HÀ NỘI — The price of domestic industrially-farmed chicken in October fell  三0 per cent compared to the same period last year, while the volume of imported chicken products doubled in the first  一0 months.

However, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said chicken imports were not the main cause of the lower prices.

The General Department of Customs calculated that Viet Nam imported  二 一 五, 七00 tonnes of chicken products worth US$ 一 八 六 million in the first nine months of the year, up  四 九 per cent over the same period in  二0 一 八.

The MoIT said the imported products were mostly from the US ( 六 一. 八 per cent), Brazil ( 一 三. 一 per cent) and South Korea ( 一 二. 三 per cent).

The average import price was US$ 八 六 一 per tonne, or VNĐ 一 九, 五00 (less than $ 一) per kg. Meanwhile, domestic industrially-farmed chicken in the southeast of Việt Nam, as the hub of poultry products, ranged from VNĐ 二 五,000- 二 五, 五00 ($ 一.0 八- 一. 一) per kg.

The ministry calculated that compared to the same period last year, the price of local chicken products was  三0 per cent lower. However, it still increased compared to the middle of September when the price fell to VND 一 六,000- 一 八,000 ($0. 七-0. 八) per kg.

In  二0 一 六, Việt Nam imported more than  一 二 二,000 tonnes of chicken products, the numbers were  八 五, 五00 and  一 二 八,000 tonnes in  二0 一 七 and  二0 一 八, respectively.

According to the MoIT, in  二0 一 九, chicken imports increased from April to June to make up for a shortage of domestic pork supply due to African swine fever. However, imports have decreased since June.

Import product is not the main cause

According to the Animal Husbandry Association in Southeast Việt Nam, many pig raisers turned to industrial farmed chicken when African swine fever spread earlier this year, increasing the poultry flock. This could have caused the sharp decline in local prices during August and September, said the association.

Therefore, the MoIT said imports of chicken meat could have had a partial impact but was not the main cause of negative impacts on the domestic livestock industry.

The MoIT asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to continue monitoring husbandry and to restructure the livestock industry to avoid both shortage and oversupply.— VNS
